Examination, diagnosis, and prevention of foot disorders can take many forms. Unfortunately, major foot problems can result when people attempt to diagnose and cure their own foot ailments or neglect their foot health altogether. Early diagnosis and treatment of foot problems are worthwhile investments in overall good health.
The following are conditions that are diagnosed and treated:
- Diabetic Foot Conditions: Diabetes is a condition that has any number of related chronic conditions that arise over time. Circulatory problems brought on by diabetes result in neuropathies that require checkups to ensure serious conditions do not arise and are left untreated.
- Sports Medicine Foot Care: Athletic pursuits are commonplace today, and improper form can frequently lead to injury over time. Wearing the correct footwear for sports can provide needed foot and ankle support, or orthotics may be recommended to provide additional support where required. If you are an amateur or pro athlete, experiencing foot pain, is usually a good reason to visit a podiatrist for an examination.
- Orthopedics and Biomechanics: Simple diagnosis may lead to a recommendation for very conservative interventions such as orthotics. Prescription orthotics are custom-made as shoe inserts designed to correct irregular or abnormal walking patterns and to restore balance and proper foot function from heel contact to toe push-off. Orthotics can often prevent additional problems from developing, and help address issues such as corns and calluses. Podiatrists prescribe orthotics as a moderate approach to resolving many foot problems.
- Pediatric Foot Conditions: Examination of children’s feet is an integral part of podiatry. Frequently children have structural imbalances of the feet that may go unrecognized and can lead to other misalignments and imbalances within their skeletal system. Detected early, these imbalances of the foot structures, some of which are related to bone, cartilage and muscular structure, are treated so that a sturdier foundation can be provided for the later years.
- Senior’s Foot Conditions: At the opposite end of the scale, care is required for many foot problems commonly seen in seniors. With proper care and attention to their feet, seniors may enjoy many years of pain-free foot function.
